Counting on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up! There are so many activities that can be done to tie in the holiday with math. I like to take every chance I get!

Count the Coins

You can do this a few different ways. You can make a pot (think a pot at the end of the rainbow) using a box, pot, or container that you already have. If you don’t have one of those, you can staple/glue/tape three sides of two pieces of paper together, leaving the top open. Have your child decorate their own! In addition to the pot, have gold coins! Again, you can use real coins, paper cut outs, or if your really want to go all out, chocolate gold coins! Practice counting the coins that go in the pot of gold!

Find the Shamrocks

Cut out several shamrocks out of green paper. You can probably find some in the store too, if you don’t want to cut them all out! Hide them around a room, and have your child find them. They should be sure to count them as they collect, to be sure they found them all!

Patterns

Now that you have gold coins and green shamrocks, have your child create patterns out of them! You can add other pictures as well, such as leprechauns, and rainbows.

Another great way to work with patterns is in a rainbow! Sticky tape is a great resource to use with kids. Lick it and stick it! If you don’t have sticky tape, you could glue little pieces of colored paper, or even color the rows in the rainbow.

What kinds of St. Patrick’s Day activities do you do at home? Share them here! Thank you, and have wonderful holiday!

I remember being young, and my Mom used green food coloring in out milk! I don’t know I would want it now, but it’s something I won’t forget! Make memories, they will last forever :)
